Dhaka Gladiators post maiden win

Post  Admin on Mon Feb 13, 2012 5:49 am

Batting rot spurred Sylhet Royals’ further downfall as Dhaka Gladiators thumped them by seven wickets to open their account in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Dhaka skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortoza caused the most damage to Sylhet scalping their two influential batsmen- Peter Trego and Alok Kapali. Sylhet thereafter never recovered the loss and eventually were wrapped up for 124 in 19.5 overs. Dhaka Gladiators knocked off the target quite easily with 10 balls to spare to hand Sylhet consecutive second defeat.

Dhaka however failed to get off a solid start as Nabil Samad gave Sylhet an early breakthrough having removed Azhar Mahmood (9) which was badly needed for Sylhet to defend their paltry total.

Azhar’s dismissal had no impact on Dhaka batsmen. Local youngster Anamul Haque Bijoy charged the bowlers mercilessly to frustrate the Sylhet fans.

Anamul, considered one of the future talents of Bangladesh, showed his maturity in the top level cricket by tackling foreign bowlers what the other local batsmen failed to show so far. He outshined his more illustrious colleague Ashraful in the crease with whom he shared 43-run partnership. When Ashraful was struggling to get his eye in and rotated the scoreboard, Anamul’s onslaught released the pressure of asking run rate. But the beautiful knock came to an end when he charged Shohail Tanvir, only to offer a simple catch to Imrul Kayes. The gloveman hit 48 off 37 clobbering three fours and four sixes.

ut by then Dhaka almost ensured the victory as Ashraful and Darren Stevens took the side to the home without any fuss. Ashraful signed off the match with a six.

Sylhet on the other hand faced a terrible batting collapse from the beginning. Azhar Mahmood however drew the blood first trapping lbw Kamran Akmal to give him six ball-duck. Mashrafe then broke the spine of Sylhet getting rid of Trego (9) and Kapali (10).

Dhaka’s brilliant bowling was complimented by their fielders electrifying fielding which caused four run-out of Sylhet. The first man to trap in run-out was Imrul Kayes who provided the expected blitz despite the wickets tumbling around him. Kayes made 23 off 13 hitting one four and two sixes. Naeem Islam then tried to hold together Sylhet’s innings amidst the odds. He though started sluggishly, gradually compensated it by accelerating his innings. Elias Sunny then removed him to let Sylhet down further. Naeem scored by then 30 off 24 clattering two fours and as many sixes.

To worsen the situation, Sylhet’s last recognized big hitter Nadif Chowdhury was trapped in run-out. Aussie recruit Bard Hogg then tried utmost to accelerate the innings but his flamboyance was checked by Dhaka bowlers’ disciplined bowling effort. Sylhet’s last two batsmen also ran them out to accumulate runs in a desperate attempt.

Mashrafe claimed two wickets for just 22 runs while Keiron Pollard, Elias Sunny, Ashraful and Azhar Mahmood picked up one wicket apiece.
