Mushfiq optimistic to fare well in T20

Post  Admin on Thu May 24, 2012 4:50 am

Mushfiqur Rahim, the captain of Bangladesh believes the success in the Asia Cup could be pivotal for Bangladesh to be consistent in Twenty20 cricket, a format where his side always struggled to get the feat.

The diminutive gloveman joined the ongoing practice camp on Wednesday after finishing tour with his family.

“We’ve never been consistent in Twenty20 format but this time we’ve nice chance to produce a good performance in this sort of cricket as we’ve come from an excellent Asia Cup,” said the captain after the practice session at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

“If we showcased the consistency which we showed in Asia Cup, I believe we could be a side to be reckoned with,” he added.

Bangladesh’s track record in Twenty20 cricket was not good enough. They won only one match in their last 14 outings in the shortest format of the cricket. Bangladesh have played so far 18 Twenty20 matches and sealed four wins overall. They played against Zimbabwe only one Twenty20 match which was their inaugural match in this format in 2006 and won the match.

The ongoing practice camp was designed to have a best preparation for the upcoming tri-nation Twenty20 tournament in Zimbabwe. Mushfiqur believed his side has good chance to book place in the final in this tournament.

“In the last time in Zimbabwe, we were not up to the mark and lost the Test and ODI series to Zimbabwe. But the confidence level this time around is high. Hope we would adjust with the condition very quickly and would show our best performance. If we play to our potential it won’t be tough to secure place in the final.”

Bangladesh are currently without the head coach and bowling coach Shane Jurgensen was given the onus to supervise the conditioning camp for the time being. If Bangladesh could not manage a coach ahead of the tournament, Jurgensen will act as the interim coach.

Mushfiqur Rahim thought the absence of the head coach will not be problematic for the side as they are matured enough now.

“I don’t think the absence of head coach will be problematic. We are matured enough and we know what we should do when there will be no coach. I discussed with Jurgensen ahead of the practice session for half an hour. Later we told the boys what they lacked and what they should do. Hope we’ll take a good preparation.”

“We’ve been working with Jurgensen for a year. He knows us well. So it won’t be problem if he goes in Zimbabwe with us as head coach.”
